Scotmid Co-operative has become the first UK c-store chain to install self service tills after launching a pilot project in Edinburgh.
The move is in response to customer research which found that Scotmid’s shoppers wanted the choice of how they are served at the checkout.
Scotmid’s Pilrig store in Edinburgh will initially trial the new self checkout devices, followed by three others stores in Edinburgh before the end of the year. If the pilot is successful, Scotmid plans to roll out the tills to other suitable stores over the next year.
The new tills are designed to give customers more speed and control over their shopping experience, and will feature an intuitive interface and animated instructions for ease of use.
Tom Gibson, marketing manager for Scotmid said: “Our research has shown that many of our customers want the option of using a self service till.
“Self checkout tills can give customers more control when they are paying for their items, and can also speed up the serving times when a store is very busy. It’s all about giving our customers the choice of how they want to be served when shopping with Scotmid, and we of course will still have the friendly faces of our staff at the checkout too.”
