All 34 Budgens stores operated by Food Retailer Operations Limited (FROL) are to cease trading, administrators have announced.

After announcing the closure of nine of the stores on Tuesday (28 February), PwC today confirmed that the remaining 25 stores would close within the next two weeks, resulting in a total of 815 job losses.

Mike Denny, Joint Administrator, PwC, said: “Unfortunately, we have been unable to find a buyer and it is not commercially viable to continue trading the stores.

“We are working closely with the Co-op, USDAW and the relevant government agencies to ensure that all employees receive the maximum levels of practical and financial support through the redundancy process.”

FROL also held the leasehold interests in a further 36 non-trading stores, two non-trading properties and the head office of the former Somerfield business.

Since acquiring the former Somerfield stores from the Co-operative in July 2016, the company had experienced difficult trading conditions.

The Co-operative had offered to find jobs for its former employees.
