Billed as “a true masterpiece and one of a kind to celebrate community”, the Torridon Community Mosaic was the creation of many and celebration of all.
Store owner Kaual Patel and a team of locals residents collaborated on how they could enhance the local area and increase a sense of community spirit, resulting in the Torridon Community Mosaic.
To create the mosaic, workshops were run at Sandhurst and Torridon Junior schools in the local area with the art departments asking children to draw anything they felt represented their local community.
Select drawings were then incorporated into the mosaic which was launched to a crowd of local shoppers in December 2023, with the children able to see their art work bought to life and set in stone for all of time for the whole community to enjoy.
The Torridon Community Mosaic features iconic local landmarks such as St. Andrews Church and war memorial, the community-run library, Corbett houses, the listed Broadway Theatre, Sandhurst school which survived bombing during World War 2, Catford ‘s most famous cat, parks, as well as the Nisa Local store which has been at the heart of the community since 1984.
The mosaic was funded by Torridon Convenience Store, a community grant and through Nisa’s Making a Difference Locally charity. To date, Torridon Convenience has donated £15,000 through MADL to numerous charitable causes.
