Londis retailers are to benefit from a shake-up of the Musgrave GB supply chain.
Managing director Phil Smith told delegates at the recent Londis retailer conference in Harrogate that the move, which will involve rolling out pm deliveries, would help drive growth in 2008.
Six-day deliveries are to be introduced, along with recycling initiatives which will involve collecting cardboard and plastic from stores to be recycled at retailer service centres.
The entire vehicle fleet will be equipped with roll cages, and an increased number of backhaul deliveries will mean fewer empty lorries on the roads. Chilled vehicles will also be added to the fleet so goods will no longer need to be delivered in ice-packed containers.
Supply chain director Scott Wharton said: "We are creating a customer-focused supply chain that makes life simple, is consistent and provides a competitive edge for our retailers."
Londis retailers will also benefit from a wide-ranging IT systems upgrade. This will include the provision of an entry-level epos system for retailers at £4,000, with full product, promotion and ordering capability.
An upgrade to the full-scale Londis Manager epos system includes a wireless handheld terminal, automatic re-ordering, stock-taking, integrated retail sales reports and the ability to download multibuy offers.
Wharton added: "Over the past 12 months most of our managers have completed three days working in Londis stores, with the simple aim to ensure that we fully understand the challenges and needs of our retail partners."
