More than a third of consumers have made resolutions to eat and drink more healthily in 2015, according to new research.
The research from analysts Canadean found that healthier eating is the number one resolution for UK consumers, increasingly in women aged 18 to 24.
According to Canadean, out of those consumers who want to become healthier in this year, 65% plan to eat more fruit and vegetables, 58% want to eat less fat and 53% want to eat less sugar. Exercising more regularly, controlling portion sizes and limiting the intake of processed foods are also seen as important methods of healthy living.
Retailer Jamie Keshwara of Nisa Local in Whittlesey told C-Store: “Everyone wants to change their diet in January after such a gluttonous Christmas period. We are adapting our range to account for this, concentrating on salads and promoting healthier brands such as weight watchers.”
Catherine O’Connor, senior analyst at Canadean said: “It will be important to present consumers not only with low-calorie options, but also with holistically wholesome fare and ingredients offering positive nutrition.”
However, Canadean estimates that a quarter of consumers will abandon the desire to eat healthily within a couple of weeks.
