I think the debate around “zero hour” contract is overrated and I fail to see what the hype is all about from our perspective. We should simply take the opposite view and offer all our employees a decent contract. The contract is a sign of commitment between the employer & employee. It also shows that you care about the people who work for you with the security of a weekly wage. I believe people who work regular hours are far more committed to the mutual benefit of your business than people on zero hour contract who I found the least motivated with very low morale. It also impacts on training staff for the long term.
We are now in an ultra-competitive retail market, with deflation here to stay for a while forced by Aldi & Lidl. Under these circumstances, service and professional standards by well-trained committed staff should be our priority and the alternative is surely a false economy.
