Debbie Kaur, from Tesco Express Canton, Cardiff, scooped the Community Hero award in addition to winning the Multiple Sector award.
Debbie received £500 for being a category winner and another £250 as Community Hero.
She was chosen by judges as Community Hero because of her ability to rally her colleagues and customers to donate to good causes. Many of the charities Debbie has chosen to support have been in response to seeing customers affected by disabilities and illnesses.
Debbie is so dedicated to her community that she has even opted not to take a promotion to become team leader as she wants to remain in a role where she gets to speak to her customers every day.
“I think you should do what makes you happy in life. If you can enjoy your job and make others happy while doing your day’s work that gives me a real sense of achievement,” she points out.
The dedicated member of staff has even been called into work when she’s been in bed, because a customer had asked for her personally.
“A little girl came into the store on her way to school at 7.30am, saying she was lost and didn’t know where she lived, but Debbie does. So I got a call saying can you come and tell us where this girl lives!”
On hearing she had won the title, Debbie said: “I’m absolutely overwhelmed to have won this. It’s amazing to be recognised for everything I do for my community.
“My customers will be really pleased when they find out I’ve won.”
