Booker is to increase the number of beehives filled with colonies at its Hatfield Distribution Centre.

As part of its planet commitment, the wholesaler decided to house bees and six volunteers willingly jumped at the chance to help.

Booker said that the colonies have been successful for almost five years with the Hatfield site now offering beginner beekeeping courses to colleagues.

In addition, Booker is in the process of purchasing a new nuclear swarm of bees from a pre-existing hive, with hopes to grow another colony of up to 100,000 bees. If achieved, this would mean that there would be four active hives currently in use at its apiary.

Sustainability manager at Booker, Catherine Marston, said: “This is a fantastic project and I’m proud of the beekeeping team at Hatfield. The volunteers work hard to keep the bees healthy, and it is great that we are expanding. We are also looking for other suitable sites across our estate and will offer bee keeping training to interested colleagues so we can continue to have a positive impact on the environments we operate.”
