Last year, inflation helped to boost sales over Valentine’s Day, but new research form analysts Nielsen has shown that 17% of households plan to celebrate the event, up from the 15% figure last year.
The big winners on Valentine’s Day 2024 were boxed chocolates and gift packs of toiletries, the data reveals. Chocolates were up by 10.9% year-on-year, while gift packs grew by 12.9%. This came on top of some already strong growth. Last year, in the week running up to 1 February, confectionery sales were up by +4.4%, while toiletry gift packs were up 19% on 2023 figures.
More broadly speaking, food and drink unit growth was up by 0.9% last year, and this year - with the day falling on a Friday – it’s hoped alcohol sales will also rise. Nielsen says it advises the retail community to stock a plentiful range of Valentine’s categories to encourage footfall.
