A burglar who was caught on CCTV climbing through the roof of a Nottingham-based Sainsbury’s Local has been jailed.
Steven McMahon was spotted dangling from the ceiling by staff at the store in Waverley Street, Radford, at 6.10am on 21 February.
The 50-year-old swiped around £200 worth of National Lottery scratchcards, crisps, washing detergents and food products from the shelves before fleeing via a fire exit.
Response officers arrived within six minutes of the 999 call and found a man matching the intruder’s description nearby. McMahon was arrested and taken into custody.
He pleaded guilty to burglary and was jailed for 22 weeks when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court the very next day.
Sergeant Karl Browne of the City Central neighbourhood policing team said a rapid response by officers on duty allowed them to catch the burglar red-handed.
“I’m pleased he has also been dealt with swiftly by the courts,” said Browne. “Commercial burglaries are taken very seriously by the force as we understand the financial impact on businesses and the emotional impact on members of staff.
“McMahon thought he could smash his way through the roof of a supermarket and take what he wanted so I’m pleased he has now been handed a spell behind bars.”
