The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has just issued a reminder to businesses of their requirement by law to pay their annual data protection fee.
The fee, which shows customers you take the safety of their personal information seriously, is based on size and turnover. If your company uses CCTV or dashcams, then you are likely required to pay. The Data Protection (Charges and Information) Regulations 2018 require any business electronically handling personal information, such as names and addresses, to register with the ICO and pay the fee.
Businesses can check if they need to pay here. There are three tiers, with most businesses falling into tiers 1 and 2, which require a £40 or £60 fee annually. Failure to pay the fee could result in a £4,000 fine and reputational damage. The cost of the fee hasn’t changed since 2018.
The ICO’s sponsoring department, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, is presently consulting on an increase of 37.2% to this, which would see the tier 1 fee increase to £55 and tier 2 to £82 in 2025.
