A new YouGov survey has highlighted the opportunity for stores to win market share among “increasingly plastic waste-conscious shoppers”.
Half of shoppers (50%) are using fewer or no plastic bags for fruit and vegetables, while 77% are reusing shopping bags, according to the survey of over 2,000 UK consumers.
One in three (33%) use plastic bottle recycling facilities and 20% are purchasing sustainable consumables, such as reusable office cups and bamboo cotton buds. Furthermore, 45% are buying fewer single use plastic items such as plastic straws and cutlery, the SodaStream-commissioned survey revealed.
It also found that socio economic status and gender had little influence on whether shoppers took action to reduce their consumption of avoidable plastic.
Tiago Alves, general manager at SodaStream UK, said the results of the survey provided a “real opportunity to win market share amongst increasingly plastic waste-conscious shoppers”.
The survey revealed that 71% of respondents say supermarkets should offer more packaging-free fruit and vegetables, while 68% say they should encourage suppliers to reduce plastic waste.
