Flavoured vaping products play a central role in preventing smoking relapse, according to new research by Elf Bar.
The study, which surveyed 6,000 UK adult vapers, found that 41% would switch back to smoking if flavour restrictions were introduced.
Two thirds said having a range of flavours helps to stop them from going back to smoking tobacco.
While 38% said they would seek illegal vapes if flavours were restricted following a single-use ban.
The research comes ahead of the second reading of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill tomorrow, which could grant the UK government the power to restrict the sales of vape flavours, said Elf Bar.
The Bill states it will allow ministers to regulate flavours, but the exact details of how this will be enforced are still unclear.
Elf Bar’s study also revealed that 59% of adult vapers use fruit or other sweet flavours at least once a week.
Speaking to Convenience Store, Aman Upal of One Stop Mount Nod warned a total ban on flavours would be the “worst thing possible” and would further fuel the illicit trade.
“Ninety percent of the vapes I sell are flavoured. I don’t mind if there are some restrictions on flavours, especially those that mimic sweets or drinks, as they tend to appeal more to younger people. However, I hope that common sense is applied when considering the flavours and the target profiles,” he explained.
Elf Bar said its findings underscore the pressing need for balanced regulation that considers the crucial role of flavours in smoking cessation.
The vape company added that it will continue to advocate for proportionate vaping regulation and ensuring adult smokers have access to the tools they need to quit smoking.
