Officers are investigating a robbery which took place at a McColl’s store in Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, in which thieves ram-raided the premises to try and steal the store’s ATM.
Cumbria Police say the incident took place at 2.45am on Friday June 15. The group of robbers forced entry into the store and used cargo straps attached to a white Ford Transit van to remove the store’s cash machine from its fixed base.
The offenders made off from the location, without the ATM, after being disturbed and caused considerable damage to the store.
The van used in the incident was stolen from an address in Brough, in East Riding of Yorkshire. The stolen vehicle has since been recovered by officers.
Detective Inspector James Yallop said: “We are appealing for anyone who has any information on this incident to get in touch in order to assist with our enquiries.
“This incident is the latest in an ongoing organised crime trend which has occurred across the North of England. We are working closely with a number of forces to identify those responsible.”
Police are appealing for any witnesses that may have seen any suspicious activity in the area to come forward.
The Market Street road was closed for several hours in both directions while investigators carried out their work.
