The Scottish Grocers’ Federation (SGF) has regretfully announced the passing of one of its longest-serving elected members and twice president, Tom Wilson.
He passed away on Thursday 2 November 2023, aged 83, in a hospital in Stirling.
Wilson ran a family convenience store business across Stirling, Edinburgh and Lennoxtown from 1953 until his retirement in 2017. He is survived by his wife Anne, son Iain, his partner Louise and their four children.
He represented SGF as President twice and was the Scottish representative on the Committee of Commerce & Distribution in Brussels. Additionally, he served on the Thistle Guild of Spar and later became joint Chairman of the NISA Scotland committee.
Mr. Wilson was a Treasurer of the Stirling & District Citizens Advice Bureau for many years. In 2009, he was recognised in the Who’s Who of Britain’s Business Elite for his work with SGF Services Ltd.
He was also a member of the Paul Harris Rotarian and served as the Past President of the Stirling Rotary Club, Past President of Airthrey Castle Curling Club, and had just become an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Stirling Golf Club.
Scottish Grocers’ Federation chief executive Dr Pete Cheema OBE marked the loss. “Tom was resolutely committed to supporting our sector and gave endlessly to both his community and all of the many organisations he worked with.
“I had known Tom for 35 years and we often travelled together to SGF meetings. He was both a retail competitor and a close neighbour. We both had a store in the Raploch, Stirling and we both live in Bridge Of Allan, only a couple of roads apart. My wife Kay and I went to visit him just a few short weeks ago and we are all deeply saddened by the loss.
“Tom was a passionate spokesperson for the convenience sector, and he will be sorely missed. Our deepest condolences and thoughts go out to his wife, son and daughter in law, and their family.”
