Appleby Westward logistics director, Del Phillips, has raised £8,500 for Marie Curie by completing a 24-hour endurance challenge last month.

A proportion of the funds were raised thanks to the donation pots placed in each of Appleby Westward’s 133 company-owned Spar Stores. The wholesaler also supported Phillips by donating £500, producing a promotional banner and a t-shirt, and displaying posters.

Taking place on Saturday 29 July from 9am, the challenge involved Phillips completing a 1.4 mile circuit around the Latchbrook area of Saltash, Cornwall, with each lap followed by a set of press ups and a set of pull ups, for a full 24 hours. Phillips exceeded his goal by completing 67.2 miles, 3,820 press ups and 408 pull ups within the 24 hour challenge period.

Speaking after the challenge, Phillips said: “The support I received throughout the challenge was overwhelming; family members supported me through the whole 24hrs, and friends and colleagues joined me at various times, some setting their alarms to join me in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“The challenge was tough and there were a couple of low points, midnight being the worst with nine hours still to go, but the training paid off and I managed to stay positive. The support from my friends, family and Appleby Westward colleagues really kept me going and I managed to complete the challenge.

“I’m really pleased with how much I have raised for such a worthy cause.”
