With less than two weeks to go until most kids go back to school, symbol groups and convenience retailers are helping busy parents with a range of promotions on all the essentials for the new term.
This week, Nisa has launched a new ‘Cool for School’ promotion running until September 9. The campaign is designed to tap into the back to school opportunity and drive sales and footfall for retailers.
Products on offer include selected cereals at £2, Hartley’s Jelly Pots at three for £1 and selected six packs of crisps six packs, four packs of Cheestrings and four packs of Fruit Shoot priced at £1.
Nisa has also launched themed POS to accompany the promotional offer, which will also be promoted on social media and through the symbol group’s consumer website.
Nisa’s head of marketing Philippe Rondepierre said: “Convenience stores are well-placed to meet the needs of busy, time-poor parents who need a variety of last-minute items for packed lunches.
“This promotion aims to support our retailers in making the most of this opportunity, whilst helping their shoppers to find everything they need to prepare for their children going back to school.”
Costcutter Supermarket Group (CSG) has also launched its own back to school campaign, with additional activity planned for Freshers Week to target the college and university market.
CSG marketing executive Izzie Forth explained: “Our back to school campaign launched this week and is all about outstanding offers on meal time must-haves. Featuring breakfast and packed lunch essentials at exceptional prices and fresh evening meal deals for under £5, we’ve created a campaign that will help our retailers attract time-strapped shoppers with products and prices that suit their mission.
“Supported by consumer leaflets, inspiring content across social channels and the Costcutter website, once the kids go back to school, the campaign will also see outstanding offers on lunchbox heroes highlighted each day on social media, helping drive further awareness and footfall.”
Anita Nye, manager of Eldred Drive Stores (Premier) in Orpington, Kent, is also cashing in on the back to school occasion. She is used to kids and parents coming into her store looking for last minute items for the new term.
“Some people are organised but there is always a few kids and parents that forget stuff,” she said. ”We have a lot of kids coming into our store so we’ll have our usual Premier offers on soft drinks and crisps next month as well as our newly expanded healthy snacking range.
“We also have a stationery section with pens and pencils and other things like calculators so we quite often have people coming in for those. In our area, they stagger when each year group goes back which means we can build up to when all the primary and secondary schools go back. By the first Friday in September it’s a bit manic!”
Raj Aggarwal, owner of Spar Hackenthorpe in Sheffield, is hoping to have similar success with his back to school stationery range.
“When the kids are going back to school they need various pens, pencils and protractors,” he said. “We always have them in-store, but we top it up for September. We try to keep it reasonably priced, but even then you’re looking at 40-50% margins.
“We use Jacksons to supply our stationery. We look at the new designs of pencil cases and folders, and try and stock something a bit funky that the kids will like.”
