Tesco has become the UK’s first supermarket to use recycled plastic to re-surface a store car park.
The re-surfacing of the car park, at Tesco Extra Cuckoo Bridge, Dumfries, used the equivalent weight of 225,000 plastic carrier bags, saving over 900kgs of plastic from going to landfill.
Working in partnership with plastic road company MacRebur, the move is one of the ways that Tesco is looking to re-use waste plastics and promote a sustainable closed loop system, it said.
The plastics used for the car park were added into an asphalt mix and the equivalent weight in fossil fuels was also saved from extraction, leading to a carbon footprint reduction of over one tonne.
