When retailer Julie Kaur combined her love for running with her passion for giving back to the community, she not only accomplished a marathon but also another two races.
The Telford retailer of Jule’s Convenience store recently completed the Chester Triple Series 2024, raising over £1000 for Severn Hospice. She took home a trio of medals after running a 10km race in March, a half marathon in May and lastly the Chester Metric marathon at the start of this month.
Beyond running, Julie commits a fair amount of time raising funds for local charities and engaging in local initiatives.
She shared why it’s important for retailers to play their part in their communities, no matter how small the contribution. “You should always have a goal,” she told Convenience Store. “As retailers, we do a day-to-day job, but we’re very fortunate that we get a lot of respect from residents passing by. So in a way I think we can put something back in so that customers can see that we’re actually doing something outside the box and building community relationships. And since Covid, I feel that we should all be doing our little bit, you know, whether it’s doing a raffle in store or a sponsored walk.”
A 5k walk or run is a great way for those looking to support local causes and take on a new challenge, she recommended. “Everybody’s capable of a Cancer Research walk. It’s a 5K, two hours of your day. Even if it’s just going to watch a 5-a-side football match and just sponsoring them with Lucozade or water.”
Moreover, Julie said it is “good for our mental health as retailers” to go out into the community and engage with the public. “Go out and see how the public live on a day-to-day instead of just donating. I think it’s nice to be part of a team or a crowd.”
