The sun gave its blessing to the 50th anniversary of family-run Holborn’s Stores in Redhill at the weekend. A fun day of events was organised by Dean Holborn and family, with shoppers alerted to the event via a post on the group’s Facebook group.

Dean said he also seized on the opportunity to freshen up the front of one of his two stores for the event. “We knew it was coming, obviously, but we saw it as a good opportunity to tie it in with a refresh for the store, and especially the front.”

As well as this, the huge milestone was depicted by historical photos – albeit big versions. “We put out on display all the historical photos of the store, like its history really, from over the years. And they’ve been blown up and put on boards.”

As well as this, there was plenty of entertainment and sampling for visitors celebrating the event. Dean adds: “Lots of people came and we had a face painter there, plus we had music and some suppliers as well, giving out samples - people like Brewdog and Edwards, a local butchers from Reigate. We also had artisan baking from the local Chalk Hills Bakery, who donated bread for us to give away.

“We were busy all day and the weather was lovely, so that helped. We also had some balloons made for the day by a guy who did all the artwork for the 50-year celebrations - he’s done a logo to commemorate. And I also did a speech which you can find on our Facebook page as my wife put it up there.”

But how did the Holborn family remember exactly when the store was opened? Easy, Dean says. “We know the exact date actually – which was the Sunday of our celebration - because it’s my brother’s birthday. So that’s how we remember the date!”
