Retail charity GroceryAid has given out over £3m to help those in the industry who have fallen on hard times.

During the past 12 months the charity has helped more than 6,500 people and has spent a record £3,012,962 on welfare support, either via financial assistance or through its Welfare Helpline.

This welfare support was possible due to a record-breaking £3,626,069 that was raised during 2012/13.

The charity, which helps those who are working or have worked in the retail industry, raised almost £600,000 - a 7% increase on the previous year - through high profile events including the Annual Diamond Ball and the Sporting Heroes Luncheon. Over £1m was raised through the charity’s regional branches.

GroceryAid was created last year, following a merger between retail charities Caravan and Sweet Charity.

Gillian Barker, GroceryAid director general, thanked those who contributed: “I am delighted that following the merger of Caravan and Sweet Charity in 2012, the industry continues to pull together to enable us to help even more people than ever before,” she said.
