The family-owned independent chain Harry Tuffins has been bought by the Midcounties Co-operative group.
The purchase of the 10-store chain, which has sites in Powys, Flintshire, Shropshire and Gloucestershire, will provide a significant boost to the Midcounties Co-operative.
Chief executive Ben Reid said it was keen to build on the success enjoyed by Harry Tuffins, with a key focus on maintaining its strong community links. “As a member-owned Society with values of democracy, openness, equality and social responsibility, we believe the fairer way we do business is an excellent match with the family ethos the company has long adhered to,” he said.
Significant investment is planned for the estate over the coming months. However, it is understood that stores are to retain the Harry Tuffins fascia.
The jobs of all 449 workers have been secured.
The Delves family, who founded Harry Tuffins back in 1955, said: “We are confident that in The Midcounties Co-operative we have found someone who shares our values and understands these stores have a special place in the community, and they will continue that tradition.”
