Independent stores are seen as the softest targets by shoplifters, according to new research by G4S Security Services.
The survey, which was carried out by 1,204 adults aged 16-24, suggested that 3.4 million people in the UK have shoplifted within the past five years, stealing on average £105-worth of goods per person. The report also found that 24% of adults believe that it is easiest to shoplift from an independent retailer. Tony Washington, who runs Taylor’s store in Honley, West Yorkshire, believes the findings emphasise the lack of deterrent against committing a crime.
He said: “A lot of retailers have extensive security systems in place. However, it is the fact that shoplifters know they can be caught but not properly punished that keeps them targeting small stores.”
