Independent retailers had their imaginations fired by Wednesday's Walk and Shop Day, the latest project from the Federation of Wholesale Distributors' My Shop is Your Shop (MSYS) campaign.
Geeta Doal, who runs a Lifestyle Express store in Wheaton Aston, Staffordshire, with her husband Charanjit, devised a special 'Walk Dance' to celebrate walking to the shops, which made its debut in a special performance at the local community centre last Saturday, raising £1,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Leicester Londis retailer Raj Aggarwal is donating 10% of every sale he made to customers who walked to his shop on Wednesday, with the funds raised going to a local school and Menphys, a charity helping children with disabilities.
In addition, Lifestyle Express retailer Khalid Mohammed from Stockport, Cheshire, is one of 20 retailers providing 30 high-visibility vests for local children's 'walking buses'. The vests are sponsored by Parfetts Cash & Carry, Flora and Tate & Lyle, and carry the retailer's shop name and the MSYS logo.
