The Chartman Group, which operates nine Spar outlets in the South West, has completed a major refit of its Winning Post forecourt store on the A38 near Exeter.
The company had waited seven years to carry out the development, having first bought the forecourt business in 2007 with a view to carrying out a substantial expansion.
“We prepared plans for the site at the time, but felt it did not do justice to what we wanted to achieve as we were constrained by the size of the plot we had,” said Chartman Group director Clive Sheppard.
“But when the opportunity to acquire some additional land finally came up, we moved ahead with plans for a scheme which has now become a flagship site for us.”
The timber-framed Spar forecourt store has quadrupled in size to 2,000sq ft and features a ‘starting gate’ layout across the whole of the front of the building. The store offers an extensive food-to-go section in association with Country Choice.
South West Spar distributor Appleby Westward co-invested in the store development, which began in January at the height of the winter storms which hampered the early part of the development.
