Spar retailers will be offered the chance to install Payzone terminals after it signed a new deal with the cash acceptance network this week.
Paul Charmatz, deputy managing director of Payzone, said that retailers would be allowed to choose whether they wished to adopt the new system, or stick with their current PayPoint terminals.
"Retailers will get a better deal than they currently do with PayPoint, but the choice of whether to switch is up to them," he claimed. Payzone hopes to have 1,600 of the UK's 2,700 Spar retailers on board by the end of the year.
Chris Lewis, licensed trading director at Spar, said the new terminals, which provide mobile top-up, utility and bill payments, would hold many advantages for retailers. "This agreement will enable us to better focus on the development and delivery of electronic service, which is a fundamental part of Spar's future development."
Spar's airtime sales account for about 4% of the total airtime market, with estimated sales at £165m.
