Tates has opened its flagship Eurospar outlet in Broomhill, Sheffield - the second supermarket format Spar store to open in the UK mainland.

The former Somerfield store is 6,500sq ft and cost £1m to buy and £1m to refurbish. It is in an area containing both affluent housing and a large student population, and offers free delivery on orders above £25. Prices are equal or lower to those Somerfield offered at the site.

An expanded off-licence section allows all lagers, ciders and white wines to be sold chilled, and contains a new premium wines fixture.

Fresh food features strongly and Tates has worked with 18 local and independent suppliers such as Tyrrells and Black Sheep Ale to produce bespoke in-store advertising artwork.

The store also includes a large food-to-go section complete with seating area screening Sky news and sports programmes.

Tates opened its first Eurospar at Wollaton, Nottingham, in May. Parent company AF Blakemore is currently in negotiations with the Co-operative Group over the purchase of three other stores that have been earmarked as Eurospar outlets to be run by independent retailers.
