The Southern Co-operative has raised over £15,230 for children’s charity Whizz-Kidz with a week of fundraising events across the business.
Stores and funeral branches across southern England and the central support office in Portsmouth were challenged to hold a host of activities including cake sales, raffles, competitions and fancy dress, to raise money during The Southern Co-operative’s annual summer Charity Awareness Week for charity partner, Whizz-Kidz. According to Whiz-Kidz, there are an estimated 70,000 disabled children and young people in the UK waiting for a wheelchair. The week’s goal was to raise enough to provide a bespoke wheelchair for one of these children, at an average cost of £5,000 per wheelchair.
Heather Ridley, Whizz-Kidz’s corporate account manager, said: “We would like to thank everyone who helped make Charity Awareness Week such a big success. The £15,230 raised by The Southern Co-operative’s charity awareness week could provide tailored powered wheelchairs for three local disabled children, giving them the freedom and independence they need to live full and active lives, and every chance of the bright futures they deserve.”
With support from its customers and members, The Southern Co-operative has raised over £250,000 for Whizz-Kidz since its two-year partnership began in May 2014.
