The tobacco gantries of large Scottish stores are now under wraps, after display ban legislation came into force today.

From today Scottish stores can display no more than 1,000 sq cm (about the size of eight to 12 cigarette packs) when serving an adult smoking customer.

Small stores of 3,000 sq ft or less have until April 6 2015 before they need to comply.

“Instead of burdening retailers with yet more regulation and restrictions, the Scottish Government should look at tackling the problem of tobacco smuggling which is endemic across Scotland and which is a key source of tobacco for Scotland’s underage smokers,” said Glasgow retailer and Tobacco Retailers Alliance spokesman Geoff Barrett of Barrett’s News.
