A convenience store that opened last year and provides a “vital service” for the Walton community in Merseyside was set on fire during a riot on Saturday night.

The incident occurred after 300 people were involved in a ”violent disorder” on County Road.

Merseyside Police said a group of people entered the shop in large numbers and stole several items, including the till.

A neighbouring business told Convenience Store that the store had been ”completely trashed” and the family business would not reopen.

Protests had been organised across the country after the murder of three girls in the knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.

Kings Store, a newsagents on Country Road, was also targeted on Saturday evening, the Liverpool Echo has reported.

The shop owner told the Liverpool Echo that he has lost thousands and is considering staying away from the area.

Another convenience store was riot-damaged in Southport last Tuesday.

ACC Alex Goss of Merseyside Police said: “The violence and damage caused on County Road this evening is sickening and nothing can excuse the deplorable behaviour seen on our streets today. The impact of the disorder will be devastating for the people of Walton, but I promise that we are doing everything in our power to arrest those involved and bring them to justice.”

Amidst the harrowing events of the past week retailer Surjeet Notay has shared a message of hope, encouraging unity and resilience across the community.
