Scottish c-stores have ramped up their investments by over 50% in the past year, injecting £94m into their businesses, a signifcant rise from £62m the year before, according to the Scottish Local Shop Report 2024.
The report, compiled by the Scottish Grocers’ Federation (SGF) and the Association of Convenience Stores, was launched at the SGF’s Annual Conference.
It breaks down the substantial contribution of the convenience retail sector to the Scottish Economy and highlights the lifeline services many local shops provide for their communities across Scotland. All in the midst of a very challenging time for many homes and businesses.
The latest figures found that the sector has created more than 6,000 jobs over the past 12 months, with a total employment rising to 55,000 from 49,000 the previous year, the report revealed.
It also welcomed an increase in the number of Scottish convenience stores over the past year, up 49, to 5,220 in 2024.
Dr Pete Cheema OBE SGF Chief Executive explained that the contribution of convenience stores and retail over the past few years cannot be overstated, despite the very difficult and challenging circumstances facing many in convenience retail.
“Staff and local shop owners across Scotland continue to play an indispensable role in both the Scottish Economy and for people in their communities. The information gathered in the report clearly make the case for targeted support from government, and a more joined up approach to regulation, for our key industry. So that we can continue to deliver for our local economies and communities.”
