Single-site retailers can now begin the critical two-step process of applying for the codes that they will need to purchase tobacco legally from later this month.
The upcoming tobacco Track and Trace regulations require retailers to have an Economic Operator Identifier Code (EOIC) registered to their business, and a Facility Identifier Code (FIC) for each store or premises which stores tobacco, in order to purchase compliant cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco products from 20 May 2019.
The application process for large retailers with multiple sites began on 24 April, before opening up to small single-site retailers on 30 April.
To request the identifier codes, businesses must first create an account with De La Rue on the ID Issuer Portal at https://eutpd.uk.delarue.com by selecting ‘Create an Account’ and inputting the business name, address and VAT registration or Unique Tax Reference number.
Once the account is active, businesses will have access to the ID Issuer Portal user guide and can apply for their EOIC.
Following receipt of their EOIC, which should arrive within two working days of application, retailers will then be able to apply for their FICs.
From 20 May, all packs of cigarettes and rolling tobacco manufactured for sale in the UK will also need to include five new security features and a Unique Identifier Code.
Retailers will have one year, until 20 May 2020, to sell through old tobacco packs that do not include the new Track and Trace security features and UIC.
The regulations aim to ensure that legitimate tobacco products can be tracked through the supply chain.
The Association of Convenience Stores has launched new guidance to help retailers comply with the regulations at http://bit.ly/trackandtraceguide.
