Viral challenges are sweeping across TikTok involving participants chugging drinks or devouring food in under a minute - all for the chance to win a cash prize.

Convenience stores across the country have become popular destinations for the trending ‘Fizzy Chug Challenge’.

Retailers are daring participants to consume an entire 2L fizzy drink within 60 seconds to win £50 cash.

Videos show store owners filming contenders holding back the urge to burp or just letting it all out, resulting in a wave of humourous and often messy viral videos. One store’s video reached 5.4m views.

While chugging fizzy drinks continues to be one of the most popular challenge trends out there for retailers, many have put their own spin on the challenge.

Dave Hardav of Swaran Mini Market, Doncaster, wanted to create a new challenge unique to his store. Already capitalising on TikTok trends including the Prime craze, Dave recognised the potential of viral videos in driving footfall and sales through his door.

“We saw that there was a trend on TikTok. Everyone was doing these challenges and we wanted to do something unique in Southwell. Doncaster is very famous for its old school cakes and old school chocolate concrete which we sell. So we thought we would incorporate that into our challenge. One it is original and two nobody could copy it,” he told Convenience Store.

Swaran Mini Market’s ‘Piece of Cake Challenge’ involves eating the entire piece chocolate concrete in under 60 seconds for £50 cash. Dave explained that customers have eagerly arrived at his store to participate in the challenge.

The school holidays saw his store queued up with children and adults wanting to take on the challenge. “We announce a time of day for the challenge because the shop is busy anyway, and we’d look and have a big queue of people outside wanting to do it.”

He mentioned that individuals had traveled from afar to his store to participate and get that “60 seconds of fame” on the social media platform.

While receiving complaints that the cake challenge was ”impossible”, he decided to introduce a healthier and water-based product into the viral fun and launched the ‘Cucumber Challenge’ as well.

Other challenges also include the ‘Crazy Cracker Challenge’, ‘Hot Chip Challenge’ and ‘Van Holten’s Pickles’.
