Asda has announced intentions to grow its collection service, including a same-day collection service at its Wakefield store.

On the back of an underwhelming 0.7% growth in sales for the 12 weeks to July 5, the supermarket chain revealed a strong focus on its ‘click and collect’ service and plans to roll it out to 250 stores by the end of 2013.

The ‘click and collect’ service allows customers to order their groceries online and pick them up from stores the next day, with same-day collection available at the Wakefield branch starting this month.

Karen Hubbard, Asda executive director for property and multichannel, believes collection services “will be as big as delivery in the next couple of years”.

Andy Clarke, president and ceo of Asda, said the aim was to improve the supermarket’s coverage in the UK. “Our focus on opening up more ways for more customers to shop with us, particularly in areas currently underserved by Asda, provides us with real opportunity to grow space and channels to adapt our business to today’s customer,” he added.

Earlier this year, the supermarket announced plans to open 10 new stores by the end of the year, including four new small format supermarkets, five superstores and one new non-food outlet.
