The Co-operative Group is shelling out £8.3m on an epos system to create a single communication process for all its stores.
The InControl system is being rolled out to 550 former United Co-operatives stores, which currently operate one of five different systems as a result of previous mergers. Rollout of the system and associated training starts this month, and the group expects to convert up to 20 stores a week.
IS food retail director Mark Hale said: "This investment marks a key step in the integration of the societies and the 'one business in one year' goal."
The system comprises touchscreen tills with a customer-facing advertising screen, fully integrated Chip and PIN system and stock-and-order replenishment system. It also includes wireless technology for printing labels and price-checking.
