A record amount of people turned to GroceryAid for assistance in the 12 months ending 31 March 2017, the industry charity has announced.
More than half (58%) of those supported by the charity were of working age, while the number of people enrolled on to the Carers Programme rose by 17% to stand at 700.
GroceryAid chief executive Steve Barnes said: “We are proud to support so many people, but are acutely aware this marks a continued escalation in the numbers needing assistance. Now more than ever, we need our industry to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with colleagues who need help.”
Its regional branches raised £1.5m gross through a variety of events across the country, while the Sporting Heroes Luncheon, Diamond Ball and Summer Ball raised £750,000.
