The weather may be dreary but independent retailers across the country are helping to lift spirits with successful charity initiatives.
Earlier this month Premier retailer Mandeep Singh hit his target of raising £10,000 for a local children’s charity after hosting a high-profile football tournament at Sheffield United’s Brammall Lane football ground.
The successful event, which was also supported by Booker, Mars, Kellogg’s, Molson Coors and Cadbury, raised precious funds for Bluebell Wood children’s hospice.
Last year the event raised £8,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, and next year Mandeep is hoping to raise even more.
Meanwhile, up in Glasgow, a group of independent retailers and staff from Scottish wholesaler JW Filshill also raised £10,000 for the homeless charity Shelter Scotland after sleeping rough for the night.
Filshill’s managing director, Simon Hannah, and representatives from JTI also joined the group which bedded down in Filshill’s Hillington carpark.
“The Big Sleep Out was a challenge but if the money raised can go some way to getting people off the streets, then our efforts have been worth it,” Hannah said.
