A health and safety campaign launched by the European Commission aims to cut the number of young people injured in the workplace. The Safe Start campaign will raise awareness of the issues and define best practice for informing 18- to 24-year-olds.
It aims to remind employers of their obligations to protect younger, less experienced staff who, across Europe, are 50% more likely to suffer an injury at work.
A survey by the Health and Safety Executive found that workplace accidents cost the UK economy about £800m a year. A total of 4,435 incidents were reported in 2005. The research also found that slips and falls are the biggest causes of workplace injury in the retail sector.
The campaign will culminate in the European Week for Safety and Health at Work from October 23-27, 2006.
