The Rural Shops Alliance (RSA) has elected CitizenCard chief executive Andrew Chevis as a director.

Chevis founded CitizenCard in 1999 and has been at the forefront of the ‘No ID, No Sale!’ scheme.

Commenting on his election, Chevis urged political parties to consider rural shops in the run-up to next year’s election.

“I am looking forward immensely to getting involved with the excellent work the RSA does to support the rural retail sector,” said Chevis. “Driving to the nearest town or relying on an infrequent bus service is simply not an option for many elderly, disabled or financially disadvantaged people who live in our villages. If political parties really are committed to helping vulnerable communities, then policies which safeguard the viability of rural shops must be evident in the forthcoming election manifestos.”

On the new director, RSA chief executive Ken Parsons said: “Andrew will bring great public affairs experience to the work of the RSA at a time of political uncertainty, when we need to focus on the importance of rural retailers and the communities they serve.”
