New laws governing the manufacture of lighters have come into force. As of March 11, all new lighters made have to be child-resistant. From the same date, novelty lighters - regardless of child-resistance - are banned from being placed on the market.
Child-resistant lighters have a more complex ignition process, requiring greater strength to light.
The mechanism has been designed to ensure children under the age of four-and-a-half years old are unable to use the lighters.
Retailers are also now required to keep documentation showing where they obtained supply of any lighters and have until March 11, 2008, to sell-through non-compliant stock.
'Prestige' lighters such as Zippos will be exempt from the new laws.
