The Co-operative Group has waded in to support one of its flood-hit local suppliers, artisan sausage-maker Porcus, by widening distribution of its products to eight stores.
The decision to stock Porcas products in more stores comes after the Co-op’s Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd stores, which usually stock them, were forced to close for repairs following the severe flooding.
The specialist farm business near Todmorden has also lost regular orders from several restaurants affected by flood waters which hit the Calder Valley on Boxing Day.
Both of the flood-damaged Co-op stores are still drying out and the company told Convenience Store that it would be several weeks before they are trading again as normal.
In the meantime the company has set up pop up shops at both sites.
Sarah-Jane Clegg, co-owner of Porcus, said: “This is a really difficult time for our business. We clearly still have to keep the farm running but with a substantial drop in orders.
“We are very relieved and grateful, however, that the Co-op has stepped in and agreed to increase the number of outlets that stock our products. We understand that many of us are facing horrible times ahead but we would ask people to please support the flood relief by seeking out and buying local.”
Porcus products are now available in eight Co-op stores across the region.
