A Leicester company that supplies frozen pre-prepared curries to c-stores has been fined £5,000 after it was revealed that some of its products carried fraudulent health marks.
Ranjana Payne, owner of Rasoi Foods, admitted breaches of the Meat Hygiene Regulations during a hearing before Leicester magistrates. The court heard that health inspectors checking a c-store freezer unit found meals with the false mark. It was explained that displaying a fraudulent health mark means a company has not been subject to stringent food hygiene and safety controls.
In mitigation, it was said that Payne had not dealt with the packaging personally and had no idea a fake mark had been used. After the incident she applied to Leicester City Council for a correct mark and it was approved. Payne, who has since sold the company, was ordered to pay £3,500 in fines and £1,500 toward the £24,000 costs.
