The National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) in the Republic of Ireland is running a campaign in support of local shops, using the message 'Use Us or Lose Us'.
A spokeswoman for the NFRN in the UK said that it would be monitoring the success of the campaign before deciding whether to run it elsewhere.
The campaign aims to bring together political leaders, local retailers, the media and consumers to fight for the future of local community services.
NFRN district president Peter Steemers said: "It will encourage consumers to use local services while serving as a reminder that failure to support the neighbourhood network will result in its demise."
