No-go areas are to be created on pavements next to ATM machines in an effort to cut down on crime.
The spaces consist of a marked-out box which only the person using the ATM is supposed to occupy.
The scheme has already been piloted in Manchester and the West Midlands. In Manchester, police found that offences within 150 metres of ATMs fell by 66%.
The idea was developed by the Home Office, Local Government Association (LGA) and the UK payments association APACS.
The LGA's safer communities board chairman Hazel Harding said: "The pilot schemes show how effective simple measures can be."
