A 32-year-old man has admitted murdering Glasgow convenience store owner Asad Shah in a religiously-motivated attack.

Tanveer Ahmed, from Bradford, attacked Shah outside his shop, Shah’s Newsagents & Convenience Store, on March 24. He was later pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth university hospital in Glasgow.

Hours before he was fatally stabbed Shah had posted a goodwill Easter message on Facebook.

Ahmed pleaded guilty to the murder at Glasgow High Court on Thursday. Judge Lady Rae said there was “no justification” for the crime and that Ahmed would face a very lengthy prison sentence.

After being arrested, Ahmed released a statement through is lawyer saying: “Asad Shah disrespected the messenger of Islam the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. Mr Shah claimed to be a Prophet.

“If I had not done this others would and there would have been more killing and violence in the world.”

Following the murder, more than £110,000 was raised in an online campaign for the family of Asad Shah.
