McColl’s Retail Group has opened its 900th convenience store as it closes in on its target of 1,000 stores by the end of 2016.

The 900-store milestone was reached by the recent acquisition of an independent store in the village of Kemnay, near Inverurie, in northeast Scotland.

Previously a Costcutter, the store has now been refitted as a McColl’s with an enhanced ranges including food to go, increased promotional activity and online lottery.

The previous owner, Makin Cheema, said: “I am delighted that McColl’s have chosen to acquire and invest in the store. I found them to be a no-nonsense, professional business who were able to rapidly complete the deal and helped my staff to make the seamless transfer which was really fantastic.”

Chief executive James Lancaster said: “I am delighted with the acquisition of our 900th store, which is typical of the community based stores that we are acquiring and investing in throughout the country.”
