NFRN National President Naresh Purohit has suggested that newsagents will “respond in the way they feel is most appropriate” to a cut in retailers’ margin on The Independent.
The price rise from 80p to £1 for the Monday to Friday edition sees newsagents’ margin fall from 24% to 22.2%.
Purohit warned that retailers might also be tempted to “review the profitability of other product categories that compete for space within their stores” because of the cut in percentage margin.
At the NFRN’s annual conference earlier in the year, 250 delegates rose to their feet in a symbolic demonstration that members would stand up against publishers to ensure their margins are maintained.
ANR managing director John Lennon also slammed the cut.
He said: “In real terms, retailers are making less money now than they were in 2006.”
