The People’s Supermarket’s (TPS) application for hardship has been rejected by the business rates team at Camden council.
The member-owned sustainable food co-operative had appealed the decision made earlier this year to not grant it rates relief commonly afforded to non-profit and charitable organisations. It is now planning one further appeal.
Trading over the Olympic period had been difficult, co-founder Kate Wickes-Bull told Convenience Store. “Trading has been really tough, as it has for many London retailers, because the Olympic boom which was predicted to boost London businesses never actually materialised.
However, the Holborn store and its staff were determined to remain optimistic she added. “Despite this bit of bad news we’re putting our best foot forward, and to show how much we love our customers we are launching a special August treat.”
The Holborn store is offering each shopper who spends more than £5 in a transaction 10% off during August.
