Doncaster retailer Ram Odedra provided an early Christmas present for a local school thanks to Convenience Store and the Federation of Wholesale Distributors' My Shop is Your Shop (MSYS) campaign.
Ram won the top prize of £750 in C-Store's annual Cash for Your Community competition, which asks independent retailers to nominate a local cause that would benefit from an injection of cash.
He nominated Plover Primary for the funds as it is hoping to build an outdoor play area for pupils, but he also impressed the judges with his all-round community agenda.
MSYS chairman Alan Toft gave Ram his cheque at a ceremony at his store, the Premier-affiliated Montrose Store in Intake, attended by local MP Rosie Winterton plus staff and pupils from Plover Primary.
Ram was delighted to be able to give the school's fundraising a boost. "I feel strongly that I should do as much as I can to help the local school," he told C-Store.
The second prize of £500 went to Robert Riley of Dykes Hall Convenience Store in Sheffield, to help fund a boxing club for youngsters, with the third prize of £250 going to Jim Pancholi of Hurley Post Office in Warwickshire, who will put the money towards buying kit for junior football club Hurley Kings.
