A Hampshire retailer has successfully converted a third former pub in Portsmouth into a new Spar convenience store.

Amir Sattari and his family run four Spar stores in Portsmouth and acquired the empty Tangier public house in Copnor two years ago. The pub is a historic building constructed at the beginning of the last century and was a former Portsmouth United Breweries pub.

The pub has now been completely redeveloped into a 1,750sq ft c-store with a wide selection of fresh, chilled and frozen products including a full range of grocery products and food to go. An additional 300 sqft has been set aside for Costa Coffee, with seating for customers inside and outside the store.

Appleby Westward, the regional distribution company for Spar stores in the South West, co-invested in the development of the Tangier with the Sattari family, having set aside £2m for store development schemes with Spar retailers in the region throughout 2016.

Four years ago Amir converted the former New Roebuck pub in Buckland, Portsmouth into a Spar, and in 2013 acquired the former Devonshire Arms in Southsea and turned it into a 1,500sq ft modern neighbourhood c-store. The family also own a fourth Spar store in Osborne Road, Southsea.

Amir said: “The store looks very nice and customers in the area are very pleased with what we have done.”

Amir and his wife Jane opened their first Spar store in Hampshire 29 years ago. Now the couple are handing over the day-to-day running of the family business to their sons Karim and Reece.
